Frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers about StackTether. If your question is not here, ask us or browse the support guides.

The basics

What is StackTether?
StackTether is a hosted service that connects a business's systems to AI assistants through one secure remote MCP connection. The first edition is for managed service providers (MSPs) and connects their PSA to AI apps such as Claude and ChatGPT, read-only.
What is MCP?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI apps call outside tools. StackTether is a remote MCP server: AI apps connect to it over the internet and call its tools to answer questions from your live data.
What can my techs ask?
Anything the tools can answer from your PSA: open tickets for a client, a ticket's history and notes, linked tickets, contacts, assets, projects and tasks, contracts (without prices), their own time entries and the schedule.
Who is StackTether for?
Today, MSPs using Kaseya BMS or Autotask PSA. An insurance agency edition is planned later, and more industries after that.
Is StackTether an AI model or chatbot?
No. StackTether does not include its own AI. It is the secure connection between the AI app you already use and your business systems.
Does StackTether replace my PSA?
No. Your PSA stays the system of record. StackTether only reads from it so the AI can answer questions.

Systems and AI apps

Which PSAs does StackTether support?
Kaseya BMS and Autotask PSA are live. ConnectWise PSA and HaloPSA are coming soon.
Does StackTether support RMM tools?
Not yet. NinjaOne and Datto RMM are coming soon, in the same wave as ConnectWise PSA and HaloPSA.
Which AI apps work with StackTether?
Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok are tested end to end. Gemini Enterprise, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Cursor, VS Code, Google Antigravity and local apps such as Claude Code are on the approved list but not yet confirmed end to end.
Does it work with ChatGPT deep research?
Yes. StackTether includes ChatGPT's standard search and fetch tools over tickets and clients, which deep research and company knowledge use.
Can I connect two PSAs at the same time?
Yes. Connect a primary and a secondary PSA. Searches ask the primary first and then the secondary, and every record ID shows which PSA it came from.
Can I request a vendor?
Yes, through the vendor request form. Customer requests move vendors up the roadmap.

Security and data

Can the AI change or delete anything?
No. Every StackTether tool is read-only. No tool can create, update or delete records in your systems.
Does StackTether store my ticket data?
No. Records are read from your PSA when a tool is called and returned to the AI app. StackTether stores only audit metadata: tool, person, app, time, network address, outcome and record IDs.
How are my PSA API credentials protected?
They are saved only after a passing connection test, encrypted in a vault, never shown again, never logged, and read only by one function when a tool needs them.
Is two-factor authentication required?
Yes, for every user. Approving an AI app also needs a 2FA-verified sign-in, and sensitive admin actions need a fresh 2FA code.
Can another MSP see my data?
No. Each MSP is a separate tenant protected by database Row Level Security, and automated tests prove one tenant cannot read another's rows.
Which fields are never shown to the AI?
Passwords, secrets and keys, credentials stored on assets, Social Security and tax numbers, dates of birth, bank and card numbers, salaries, prices, costs, rates, billing amounts and home addresses.
Is StackTether SOC 2 or HIPAA certified?
No. StackTether does not hold a SOC 2 report or HIPAA certification today. An independent penetration test is planned. The security page lists every control and known limit.
Where is my data hosted?
In the United States: the application on Vercel and the database on Supabase, both in US East.
Does StackTether train AI on my data?
No. StackTether does not train AI models. Your AI app's own plan and settings decide what it does with conversations.
What about prompt injection in ticket text?
Vendor text is treated as untrusted. It is passed to the AI between clear markers labelled as data, not instructions, and cannot imitate StackTether's labels. Because every tool is read-only, injected text cannot make StackTether change anything.

Admin control

Can I choose which techs use which systems?
Yes. Vendor access is set per member, and new members start with no access.
Can I choose which AI apps are allowed?
Yes. Each AI app has its own switch for the MSP, all starting off, and you can allow or block apps per person.
Can I see what the AI looked at?
Yes. The audit log shows every tool call with the person, app, time, outcome and the IDs of records read.
How do I stop all AI access quickly?
Use the MSP kill switch in the portal, or pause a single member. Pausing, signing a member out everywhere, or resetting their password or 2FA revokes all their AI approvals at once.
Are there usage limits?
Yes: 60 tool calls a minute per tech, 1,000 vendor requests an hour per tech and 2,000 per MSP. The AI is told how long to wait when a limit is reached.

Pricing and setup

How much does StackTether cost?
StackTether is free during the Founding MSP beta; billing is not open yet. Planned launch pricing and the founding MSP offer are on the pricing page.
How do I get started?
Apply for the Founding MSP beta or contact sales. Accounts are invite-only; we create your MSP and send the first admin an invite.
What do I need before setup?
A supported PSA, permission to create a read-only API user in it, and an AI app plan that supports custom connectors.
Do techs install anything?
No. Cloud AI apps connect to StackTether over the internet. Techs only add the connector address and approve it with 2FA.
How do I contact StackTether?
Through the contact form. We do not publish an email address or phone number.
